Temple B’nai Tikvah celebrates the first year of our solar panels.

We are proud to be the second synagogue in Canada with a solar array, and the first host in Calgary of a community-owned cooperative renewable energy system.

Temple’s Climate Action

Did you know that Temple has a Climate Action Plan?

As part of our participation in the Jewish Climate Leadership Coalition, Temple has committed to making annual action plans.

Read the Plan for 5785 here. You can also check the first Climate Action Plan for 5784 here.

Katie Baker’s Climate Action Pledge

My pledge is to include climate and environmental implications in my decisions, even when they aren’t the sole deciding factor, and to mitigate my impact however possible.

For example: my kids don’t drink kefir when I send it to school in a thermos, it comes home and goes down the side k.  They do drink it from the little yoghurt drink bottles. I haven’t found a robust reusable replacement at that size (90-100ml), so we buy yoghurt drinks, drink them, reuse the bottles 1-3 times (refilling from a 2l bottle) until the lids lose their seal, and then recycle them through the temple bottle depot program. It is far from perfect, but it is the best way we can manage it at the moment.

We try to approach all of our decisions this way, and find the best option that we can manage right now, and also be aware of where we have room for improvement.

Samantha Shulman’s Climate Action Pledge

Minimize household items I buy that come in disposable plastic. Use reusable containers at re-fill stores for cleaners, soaps etc.

Betsy Jameson’s Climate Pledge

To cut down on my purchasing of single-use plastics and household products that are toxic and non-biodegradable. Items like dishwasher soap, laundry detergent, household cleaners.  I’ve become a big fan of a particular online company, Tru Earth, for things like this.  So far, I’ve used their laundry detergent, household cleaner, and toilet cleaner.  They are affordable, and they work.  I’ve started donating these environmentally friendly cleaning products to some charities I support.  If you’re interested, check out their website.
