Selichot

Selichot are the penitential prayers that Jews customarily recite on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah – a stirring service that sets our minds and our hearts in the right “place” for the coming Days of Awe. During our Selichot at Temple B’nai Tikvah, we also change the Torah covers from the colored ones we use for most of the year, to the white ones we use during the fall holidays. Come and join us for Selichot as we begin the process of renewal so essential to Jewish spiritual life during this season. This service is held on a Saturday evening prior to Rosh Hashanah. The mood of Selichot, one of contemplation and self-examination, enables us to prepare for the Days of Awe which are nearly upon us.

Children’s Service

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur morning, there will be a children’s service in the Sanctuary. Children from three years to grade four are welcome. There is no charge for the program.

Also, we are offering childcare during the morning services for the first day of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. It is for children ages 3 to 9. There will be colouring, peanut-free snacks, games, outside time, and a movie. Please bring your child downstairs to sign them in, and sign them out if you plan to leave before the shofar. There will be no in and out privileges. We will bring the kids up to the foyer just before the shofar. Please meet us there so we can release them into parental care.

Tashlich

Tashlich, a brief, yet beautiful ceremony held beside a river or stream, will take place at Stanley Park again this year (4A Street & 42 Avenue SW at West parking lot). On Rosh Hashanah afternoon, we will meet near the west parking lot at the river in Stanley Park to prepare for Yom Kippur by symbolically casting our sins into the “depths of the waters.”

2nd Day Rosh Hashanah

An intimate, poetic take on Rosh Hashanah worship. The service will be lay-led, and Rabbi Glickman will offer the D’var Torah. Everyone is invited!

20 x 20 Talks

We invited a fascinating and diverse group of Temple members to speak to us. Each speaker has submitted 20 slides which will show for 20 seconds each, allowing the speaker exactly six minutes and forty seconds to address the topic of “Unmasking” from his or her own unique perspective. Speakers: Jessica Carswell, Shelby-Jai Flick, Peta Glezerson, Kate Hadfield, Gary Rosenbaum, Elka Schrijver, Jerry Spring, and Larry Stanleigh. Engaging speakers; 20 slides; 20 seconds each; a wonderful experience for us all! View more details.

A Confession For Our Time (Contemporary Service)

A special spiritual Yom Kippur service. Congregants will lead us through this beautiful hour-long service on Yom Kippur afternoon.

Yizkor (Memorial) Service

As part of the afternoon service on Yom Kippur, we hold a beautiful and moving memorial service. This year, we will remember our own dear ones during a designated moment of silence and will inscribe their names in a Yom Kippur Memorial Booklet which will be distributed to the congregation on Yom Kippur. The Yizkor Service begins at 5:30 PM. The Yizkor list is created from our member database.

All Services will be offered in-person and streamed live on StreamSpot.
