Volunteer

At Temple B’nai Tikvah, Jewish values and wisdom are deeply embedded in a variety of Temple activities. Our committees provide many opportunities for warm, meaningful engagement.

We are currently looking to fill vacancies on Temple’s Board of Trustees for the following positions:

  • Social Committee Chair
  • Volunteer Committee Chair
  • Ways and Means Committee Chair

The Temple Board governs the affairs of the Temple and manages our finances and property. They also make policy decisions and, importantly, take action to promote the welfare of our synagogue.

The Board meets once a month in the evenings. If you are interested in being part of this important and necessary group, or just want more information, please contact Sid Horovitz, Chair of the Nominations Committee, or Michael Tavel Clarke, Temple President.

  • Volunteering at the Calgary Drop-in Centre – Temple continues to feed the hungry and homeless once a month at the Calgary Drop-In Centre. This is our 20th year doing so! Our next opportunity to serve lunch there will be Sunday, October 30. If you feel like doing a mitzvah and want to be part of the crew helping out with this worthwhile Temple initiative, please contact Paul Finkleman.
  • Adult Education – The Adult Education committee works with the Rabbi to present courses on Jewish history, culture and Hebrew language.
  • Caring Community – The Caring Community Committee works with the Rabbi to help the congregational community support its members in times of need. A few of the services that they it offers are hospital visits, Shiva support, organizing crisis support for members, and transportation for the elderly.
  • Communications – The Communications committee keeps the congregation and wider community informed about Temple events, using the Temple’s website, Facebook page, and Kol Tikvah newsletter.
  • Membership – The Membership committee recruits new members and welcomes them to the Temple community.
  • Ritual – The Ritual committee consults with the rabbi to consider the rituals and observances of the synagogue and to promote practices in the home to enhance the values of Jewish living. The committee also provides a forum for congregants to raise concerns or suggest areas of interest for further consideration by the rabbi and the committee.
  • Shabbat School – The Shabbat School committee works with the Temple’s Rabbi, Educator and other committees to celebrate Jewish holidays and put on special programs for children and youth.
  • Social Engagement – The Social Engagement committee enhances Jewish life with celebrations, entertainment, and cultural events.
  • Social Action – The Social Action Committee coordinates a variety of social action projects that serve the Calgary community, the Jewish community, and that reach beyond our borders to serve needs throughout the world. Over a third of our members participate in a social action project each year.
  • Volunteer – The Volunteer committee engages with volunteers to meet the Temple’s diverse needs and provide members with fulfilling opportunities to contribute to the Temple’s success.
